On a back road just out of Bulls is a slice of land that holds generations of remembrance for a family that carved its name into the area. Soon the names of those family members who died in war will also be carved out on a commemoration plaque to be hung at one of New Zealand's last remaining family-run cemeteries. The Fraser family cemetery, situated on Parewanui Rd three miles from Bulls, was established in 1879. The land for the burial ground was transferred to a group of trustees in 1910. To this day the cemetery is managed by trustees from the family and it was decided that a commemoration plaque was fitting for the 100th anniversary of WWI. Cemetery committee member Ian Clapham curated a family history which included a role of honour. "Some of the those that died in WWI are marked on family stones but we have had nothing that covered everybody and this was suggested at a committee meeting as a way of commemoration." Colin Scott is a Fraser descendant on both his mother's and father's side and said the cemetery is a unique part of his family history. "There are only a few family cemetery's still in use that are maintained by the family and not the council, so it is quite special." Colin Scott and his wife Kathy Scott have recently moved to Palmerston North having spent many years on a dairy farm near to the Fraser family cemetery, "as the crow flies". He said the commemoration plaque would be a good addition and the unveiling ceremony on Anzac Day would be a good time for people to come together. "It's good timing and a good reason to do this and get everyone here." Clapham said their monthly newsletter has drawn attention to the Anzac Day commemorations and family have been contacted but they would like the word to get out to the wider family. "With them spread all over the country and world, some contacts have been lost. "Most of the locals all know each other but there are family further afeild that may not have heard. We don't know how many will come. We had a picnic day at Flock House in 1995 and 500 people turned up, so how many will come on Anzac Day, we're not sure." Scott said he felt lucky to have the family cemetery so close by with all its ancestral connections. "It's on a little hill and it's a beautiful place, very tranquil. I walk through it and it feels a bit uncanny seeing how far some of the stones date back to. It's a lovely little place." The roll of honour memorial which will hold 32 names all together from the Boer War, WWI, WWII and Malaya. It will be unveiled in a commemorative service on Anzac Day, April 25, at 2pm. - Manawatu Standard | McKenzie, Glen Rae (I501186)
